Many states require the use of the American Medical Association—s Guides to The Evaluation Of Permanent Impairment in their workers—compensation systems. In 20 states, this requirement is specified by statute. (A statute is a law that is enacted and passed by a state—s legislature.) The state statutes that deal with the Guides may or may not specify which edition of the Guides to use, or how the Guides is to be utilized. In any case, it is the ultimate responsibility of the courts to interpret these statutes, which may be vague, to determine which edition of the Guides is to be used, and to establish how that edition is to be used.
